Manchester City’s date with history hits its biggest obstacle in the form for Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League quarterfinal second leg. As Pep Guardiola and his men attempt to pull off the remarkable feat of winning the four most important trophies they can win, all in one season, they must overcome a 1-0 aggregate deficit against Spurs.
City finds themselves in a familiar situation. Just last season they fell to English opposition at this same stage, getting knocked out by Liverpool. For all of their domestic success in the last decade, Champions League glory has eluded them. They’ll need to be on top of their game tonight if they are to advance to the semifinals for only the second time. Without an away goal to their name, they must avoid conceding a goal to Spurs at home or their task will become much more difficult.
As far as Spurs go, they have once again been bitten by the injury bug. Harry Kane, their main goal threat, is out for an extended period of time with an ankle injury he suffered in the first leg of this tie. They’ll need the likes of Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura to step up and fill that scoring void.
The Brazilian did just that at the weekend, notching a hat trick in a 4-0 win over Huddersfield Town on Saturday. City was also victorious, beating Crystal Palace, 3-1. Sergio Aguero limped off injured during that match, giving his side a scare. But, he has been deemed fit ahead of this crucial second leg.
Will City’s hopes of a historic quadruple live on or will Spurs play spoiler? It promises to be an exciting night in Manchester as one of these Premier League sides books their spot in the semifinals.
