City drew a blank in the first European game in Spurs new stadium, having hammered in 26 goals in the preceding eight matches in the tournament. Guardiola’s side make a point of starting quickly and with Sergio Aguero back to lead the City line the smart money isn’t on a Hugo Lloris clean sheet on Wednesday night.

Aguero is City’s leading scorer in Champions League football this season with five goals to his name. Leroy Sane and Gabriel Jesus have four while David Silva, Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling have each contributed three. Add Kevin De Bruyne to the mix and the expectation is that we should see some slick football from City.

Spurs played party poopers in their last meeting though and will have two opportunities to derail Guardiola’s bid for an unprecedented quadruple. in the next week. Spurs will return to the Etihad this Saturday for a Premier League fixture that City need to win to return to the top of the table.

Leading scorer for Tottenham, Harry Kane suffered a season ending ankle injury in the first leg paving the way for Fernando Llorente to prove his pedigree as a striker on the big stage. Heung-Min Son has come up with some vital goals for Mauricio Pochettino’s side this season and it is his strike in the first leg that separates the two teams ahead of their showdown at the Etihad.

Aguero had a first-half penalty saved by Hugo Lloris in the first leg and we could see yet more VAR interventions tonight. Thankfully VAR has worked quite well in the knockout games so far, despite having some notable detractors.

Spurs are also engaged in a four-way battle for the two remaining EPL Champions League places, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all still harbouring hopes of securing a place on Europe’s biggest stage next season.
